Fireside Chat • GrandMixer DXT
GrandMixer DXT earned the distinction of being hip-hop’s first
turntablist when his scratch solo on Herbie Hancock’s 1983 megahit
“Rockit” established an altogether new standard of DJ musicianship. This
landmark musical moment was in fact the culmination of DXT’s already
deep commitment to hip-hop — as a youth coming up in Edenwald Projects
in the Bronx, he was a firsthand witness to such foundational figures as
Kool Herc and the Herculoids, and he understood the mammoth cultural
shift taking place around him. An uptown DJ who was among the first to
invade the early '80s downtown NYC scene, he’d rock punks and b-boys
alike at the Roxy, and showcased his prodigious cutting in the climax of
the film _Wild Style_. And as an artist and producer in his own right,
his singles for Celluloid and with Bill Laswell’s Material remain
dynamic contributions to hip-hop’s then-burgeoning rhythm revolution.

[tweakism] • Audun Kleive
Audun Kleive returns to Jazzland Recordings with his first solo album since 2012's "Release". Where "Release" was largely an atmospheric album exploring the use of the electronic Wavedrum, with occasional excursions into beat-driven material, "[Tweakism]" is a return to the angular experimentation of his "Generator X" project, but this time he does so entirely solo.
Kleive is one of the most revered jazz drummers in the the Norwegian scene, having appeared on (almost literally) countless recordings throughout his career. However, in his solo incarnation, his will to explore presents a musician not to be held captive by labels or expectations. He builds musical structures from unlikely elements in unique forms, deliberately and skilfully avoiding cliché and obvious repetition, crafting his works with meticulous care and a critical ear. There are few artists so determined to be nothing but themselves.

Remembering composer Ryuichi Sakamoto
“First he said, ‘Wow.’ And then he said, ‘Okay. I would like to use Jimi Hendrix for guitar, maybe Bill Laswell for bass, and maybe Sly Dunbar for drums. And maybe the horn section from Sly Stone. I could have artists like Coltrane for solo parts and strings from the Berlin Philharmonic.’”
