Niels & the New York Street Percussionists

REPOST

com·plet·ist
[kuh m-plee-tist]
a person who attempts to complete a collection or set,
especially a collector who wants to collect an example of every item in a particular field:

The idea of the com·plet·ist series was to post rare or hard to find Bill Laswell releases but now Laswell is re-releasing his back catalogue himself via bandcamp this series will  probably come to an end even though I haven't been posting much lately anyway. Not a big fan of the corporate approach i.e. not giving original release dates and changing the covers that give the impression that the releases are new music. Yoko Yamabe gives Laswell's reason here.

  1. Not sure what to think about this one. Quite different from what most of these cats normally do (but I don't know Niels that well).

Kinda strange to have Laswell on bass and Hellborg producing. But I think Hellborg did a better job here than Laswell could've. Too many of Laswell's CDs from this period were marred by clunky Fairlight rhythms.

  2. Quite liked the fairlights at the time. Another Jonas Hellborg LP of presumably similar vintage was RAF's Ode To A Tractor. Produced by Hellborg at Greenpoint Studio, which I think he shared at the time with Laswell. This also had Brotzman & Jamal Evans plus Jens Johansson, Anders Johansson and Otto Von Waldenburg.

  3. should be an interesting listen, and it's a Brotzmann collaboration I was unaware of. Thanks for this! (And thanks for the link in your blogroll too, which is how I found you. ;) )
